The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Police Department
General Order 2-7.4
Physical Fitness Training
The purpose of this policy is to inform employees of the wellness and physical ?tness program of the UNCG Police Department. The functions of law enforcement require a level of physical ?tness not demanded by many other professions. Therefore, the department encourages employees, both sworn and non-sworn, to improve health and lifestyle habits for reasons of safety, health, job performance, and to maintain a professional appearance.
Wellness Focus
Wellness is a comprehensive term incorporating aspects of medical, physical, and emotional ?tness.
Physical Fitness Instructors will meet with employees upon request. Small group and individual ?tness training is available at the police department.
Departmentally Funded Fitness Services
To encourage employees to maintain an acceptable level of ?tness, the department will be responsible for providing certain ?tness services at no cost to full-time employees. These services are as follows:
The department will provide a ?tness center at the police department, accessible to all police employees 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Each employee will be given one hour during each shift to workout. O?cers must stay in radio/phone contact while working out and is subject to be called out if needed. Every e?ort should be made by supervisors to allow o?cers to take advantage of the workout hours. There may be reasons an o?cer may not have the opportunity to take their workout hour during their shift, e.g. manpower shortages or high call volume. An annual physical assessment will be o?ered to personnel during in-service training at no cost to the individual. This assessment will be conducted by certi?ed Physical Fitness Instructors.
An assessment data sheet (?tness pro?le) will be developed for each employee and maintained by the Training Coordinator.
Development of a ?tness improvement program, referral to a physician for medical problems, and other referrals to health professionals will be made where appropriate during assessments.
At the employee's discretion, an annual physical may be conducted by an outside physician. The employee's insurance will be used to pay for the physical.
Health-related Physical Fitness Testing
Fitness testing is available upon request by both sworn and non-sworn employees. These tests may include either the Cooper Physical Fitness Assessment Test or the Police Officer's Physical Abilities Test (POPAT).
The Cooper Physical Fitness Assessment assessment will be given by a certi?ed physical ?tness instructor and will follow the protocol of the B.L.E.T. lesson plan. Scoring is based on age and gender norms. The assessment will include the employee’s height, weight, resting heart rate, blood pressure, vertical jump, sit-ups (60 seconds), push-ups (60 seconds), 300 meter run, and a 1.5 mile run.
The Cooper test is a physical assessment which can be used to evaluate employee's ?tness levels. This will allow the physical ?tness instructors to identify ?tness areas that need improvement. The rating levels are "Excellent", "Good", "Average", "Fair", and "Poor". The POPAT is a pass/fail test and will be administered by a physical ?tness instructor. The physical ?tness instructor will administer the test on a certi?ed POPAT course under the same guidelines as the BLET POPAT state test. The POPAT is a validated abilities test and is not a ?tness test. The POPAT tests police o?cers' abilities to perform necessary job tasks as set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Committee.
