Police Department |
The UNCG Police Department recognizes the importance of obtaining and sharing information with other agencies. The effectiveness of crime prevention, intervention, and investigative efforts depends heavily upon the quality and timeliness of information resources. Therefore the department supports and participates in the following:
In the event of a failure of the recording equipment, the Communications Supervisor and Technical Services Unit will be notified immediately.
- Statewide Criminal Investigations System
The UNCG Police Department participates in the North Carolina Division of Criminal Information system.
- Access to Information Systems
The UNCG Police Department has access to local, state, and federal Criminal Justice Information Systems by means of the Department of Criminal Information (DCI), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (NLETS), National Criminal Information Center (NCIC), North Carolina Warrant Repository "NCAWARE", and the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System.
- Radio Systems
The UNCG Police Department Communications Center has access to the statewide law enforcement mutual aid radio system through the North Carolina State Highway Patrol VIPER trunked radio system.
- Emergency Notifications
Emergency notification calls shall be handled as calls for service. Procedures for accepting and delivering emergency messages are outlined in the Communications Center Training Manual as well as the UNCG Police Department General Orders Manual.
Communications has primary responsibility for activating campus wide emergency notifications; however, the following individuals have authority to initiate activation of the Emergency Notification System.
- Chancellor, or designee
- Associate Vice Chancellor for Safety and Risk Management
- University Police Chief
- Director of Emergency Management
- UNCG Police Command Staff
- UNCG Police Shift Supervisor
- UNCG Police Telecommunicators (based on protocols established by the police department for the telecommunicators)
Under The Clery Act, UNCG is required to immediately notify the campus community upon confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees occurring on the campus. Emergency notifications are issued in compliance with the University's Notification Policy and the system is tested daily by communications personnel.
If a member of the public calls and requests deliverance of an emergency notification to a student, faculty or staff, a call for service will be created in CAD for documentation purposes. The call will then be dispatched to the first available unit.
- Emergency Calls
In the event the Communications Center receives a call for service within our primary patrol jurisdiction, involving a potential threat to life or property, a CAD call will be initiated and an officer dispatched. This includes but is not limited to, assaults, fights, disturbance, robbery, larceny just occurred, intoxicated subject, shots fired, armed subject, suspicious persons, 10-50 PI, overdose, etc. Anything where a quick officer response could diffuse a situation, stop the threat, provide trauma care, or locate a suspect. The telecommunicator should obtain as much information as possible, just as we would for a call received directly from a campus property. The telecommunicator will then dispatch officers and notify Guilford Metro. In the event we are notified of a medical call or overdose, obtain enough information to enter the call and connect the caller to EMS. If a non-emergency informational call is received, provide the caller with the correct agency's phone number.
The UNCG Police Department should accept any misdirected emergency call and promptly relay information to the agency having jurisdiction.
- Fire/Security Alarms
The UNCG Police Department shall respond to fire/security alarms within its jurisdiction. Telecommunicators should dispatch no less than two police officers to respond to all alarm calls unless exigent circumstances exist. Procedures for Fire and Security Alarms are outlined in the Communications Center Training Manual.
