Tests from Policies in Seconds (Using AI)

If you’ve ever built a multiple-choice test, you know the hardest part isn’t the question… it’s the answer choices.

You have to write:

• the correct answer
• one answer that’s almost correct
• two more that sound believable but are still wrong

That takes time.

But AI can generate a solid first draft of a test in seconds.

Here’s how:

1. Locate the source material (policy, lesson plan, FTO manual, etc.)

2. Copy the full text.

3. Open ChatGPT or a similar AI tool.

4. Enter a structured prompt (example below).

5. Copy the policy text (preferred) and paste it after the prompt or upload the PDF

6. Review the questions and make any necessary edits.

7. Copy the final version into a PowerDMS test or other training management system.

Example Prompt:

Create a 10-question multiple choice test using the policy text provided below.

Requirements:

• Focus on enforceable policy requirements such as duties, prohibitions, reporting requirements, timelines, responsibilities, and procedures.
• Prioritize language containing the words “shall,” “must,” “will,” or “are required to.”
• Do not create questions from section titles, headers, or policy names.
• Use verbatim language from the policy for both the question and the correct answer whenever possible.
• Each question must have four answer choices labeled A–D.
• One answer must be the correct answer using the policy’s exact wording or meaning.
• One incorrect answer should be very similar to the correct answer but slightly altered in wording or meaning.
• The remaining two answers should be plausible but clearly incorrect based on the policy. Do not make them obviously wrong or unrealistic.
• Avoid vague questions. Questions should test specific policy requirements.

Formatting:

• List each question followed by four answer choices (A–D).
• After the test, provide a clearly labeled answer key showing the correct answer for each question.

If you create the test in PowerDMS, it can then be attached to a policy which would require members to pass the test before being allowed to sign the policy. Another option is to attach it to a course that includes the policy and any other topic materials.
