Linking Attachments to a Standard

When building files in a PowerDMS assessment, every attachment and highlight must be linked to the standard. But linking isn’t just checking a box—it’s a feature that helps guide the assessor directly to the proof you want them to see.

When used correctly, linking does three important things:

  1. Shows the assessor exactly which part of the standard your attachment or highlight relates to. Instead of searching through the entire standard, they immediately know what you’re referencing.
  2. It highlights the linked portion of the proof. This visually draws attention to the relevant language so the assessor can quickly connect your proof to the requirement.
  3. Linking activates the automatic scroll feature. If the linked section is further down in the standard, PowerDMS automatically scrolls to it. This is especially helpful for standards with multiple bullets and saves the assessor from manually scrolling to find the right section.

Choosing What to Link

When deciding which checkbox to select, think about the intent of the attachment or highlight.

Is it showing compliance with the overall standard statement, or does it relate to a specific bullet within the standard?

If it relates to more than one point, you can select multiple links. However, try to limit it to one or two. Too many links create a busy, yellow-highlighted standard and make it harder for the assessor to quickly focus on the relevant requirement.

It also reduces the usefulness of the scroll feature since PowerDMS will only scroll to the first linked point.

One Common Detail to Watch

When adding a new attachment, no links are selected by default and you must choose at least one before saving.

However, when adding a highlight, PowerDMS automatically selects the same link used for the attachment.

This is convenient—but not always correct.

For example, you may attach a policy to the standard statement, but use highlights to show compliance with specific bullets. When adding those highlights, remember to update the link so it points to the correct bullet instead of the standard statement.

This allows the standard window to scroll directly to the relevant bullet for the assessor.

Quick Takeaway

Good linking:

It’s a small detail, but it can make a big difference in how efficiently your assessment files are reviewed.
